Documentation of the use of personified virtues ornamental bands in the prague printing offices of the time of Emperor Rudolf II

The bachelor's thesis on the motif of allegories of Christian virtues in the form of female figures of Faith and Hope, Love and Justice, Wisdom and Temperance, Courage and Patience presents a mapping of the occurrence of the theme on ornamental bands in printing oficces in the time before the battle of Bílá hora. It is based on the premise of a traceable pioneering line of ornamental bands with the Virtues motif from the workshop of Michael Peterle Sr, inspired by the production of Melantrich and other collaborators and followers. It represents the popularity of the motif in art in general, with a subsequent narrowing to old prints and consideration of manuscript production. Includes a broader historical perspective and period context. The intention of the work was to evaluate the originality and artistic treatment of ornamental bounds and to contribute to a closer understanding of the transfer of decorative elements used by Czech early modern printers. The thesis is mainly prepared by the method of creative compilation of knowledge obtained through the study of relevant sources and historical analysis.
